CASS COUNTY, Harrisonville, MO

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Take verbatim notes using a stenotype machine of all courtroom proceedings, i.e. jury trials, bench trials, numerous hearings, law days
  • Utilize CAT system (computer-aided transcription) in preparation of verbatim record
  • Maintain records of all hearings, law days and trials
  • Maintain stenotype machine and laptop equipment for assured working order
  • Knowledge of courtroom procedures
  • Knowledge of Missouri Supreme Court rules on preparation of transcripts
  • Working knowledge of legal terminology, medical terminology, grammatical construction, punctuation and spelling
  • Ability to travel to Cass County and Johnson County every other week
  • Ability to travel as necessary to cover hearings and trials in other neighboring circuits other than Cass and Johnson County
  • Ability to professionally represent the Court and adhere to professional ethics
  • Good communication and English skills, self-motivated, organized and team player
  • Perform other related office work as assigned by the Circuit Judge

Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be Certified Court Reporter by the Missouri Board of Certified Court Reporter Examiners and must maintain certification and remain in good standing
  • Minimum two years courtroom experience
  • Ability to work under courtroom pressure for long periods of time without rest and at times late into the evening
  • Ability to produce same day or next day transcripts
  • Ability to produce accurate and timely appeal transcripts of multiple volumes while coordinating production of other transcript requests
  • Ability to find coverage for courtroom if on vacation or ill

This is a State position with State benefits. Court work hours will be Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with additional work hours as required. Court work hours are considered to be those in which a court reporter performs official work for the Court or hours in which the Judge requires the reporter’s attendance at the workplace. Work performed for transcription purposes is not considered to be court work hours. However, time permitting, once other court work is complete, transcription may, at the Judge’s discretion, occur during court work hours.
