Hello, MCRA Members! As our Summer of 2008 comes to a close, my year of serving YOU as your MCRA President feels much like looking forward to the final destination for an airplane ride of a lifetime. The Convention Committee is making the preparations necessary to land at our Fall Convention at the Lodge of the Four Seasons in style. Actually, the Board and I have enjoyed a fabulous flight of teamwork throughout this past year, providing the June All Star Training and laying the foundation for the convention ahead. We have been so busy that we’ve had no time to push our seats back and pull down our tray-tables, so we’re saving that relaxation time to celebrate with YOU! I wish to invite all of you to join us for our Cruisin’ To Success Celebration, September 20th, 2008, from 9:00 p.m. to midnight, in the Presidential Suite at the Lodge of the Four Seasons! Please send in your convention registration forms and make your reservations at the Lodge of the Four Seasons today! Stephanie Prewitt has rolled out the red carpet for you in her convention article, “All Aboard” as you will read in the following pages. Every detail possible has been planned for YOUR relaxation, comfort, food, fun, frivolity, and of course, your Continuing Education Points and professional camaraderie with dear friends! Now, I wish to encourage you to step forward, let us know of your desires to serve your association! Our professional future needs more leaders like the budding star inside of your heart. Think about serving on a committee, write an article for PROGRESS, share your enthusiasm with your regional members! It’s your first step to a rewarding opportunity to fill your address book with new friends all across the state and beyond! Many of you will remember Mrs. Tami Smith, who served as our NCRA Representative at our 2006 Kansas City-Crown Center Convention! She has such an inviting personality and a fun-loving spirit that we were quickly on our way to becoming friends as Chuck Motter drove us to dinner! That’s how great friendships bloom…they’re contagiously inviting when we simply realize and respect the common grounds that we share. At the 2008 NCRA Convention in Anaheim, California, Tami Smith was involved in a national election for a position on the Board of Directors. Because of our trusted friendship, Tami asked me to serve as her Official Election Representative. Naturally, I was honored to be a part of Tami’s Team and to make even more friends across the nation as I served on that committee! Can you Count the Blessings? Be a part of the future for MCRA! Open the door to this inviting new chapter for your life! You will find a multitude of rewarding opportunities and a tremendous network of friendships to enrich your personal and professional life. Earlier this year I watched a young gentleman on television by the name of Randy Pausch. Facing his diagnosis of terminal cancer, Randy is a living example of how we should Count Our Blessings in every moment that we have. In his book, “The Last Lecture” he shares his journey of wisdom and reflection on the fact that, “We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.” Here is a list of my favorite Pausch Pearls of Wisdom that I wish to share with you: · Dream Big! Get In Touch with your childhood spirit because that was our first source of dreams and inspirations! · Don’t Complain, Just Work Harder. It’s your first step to success! · Remember, No Job is Beneath You! · Don’t Obsess Over What People Think. · And if at First You Don’t Succeed…..whether you think you can or can’t, You Are Right! · “Experience is what you get, when you didn’t get what you wanted.” Don’t be afraid of a “glorious failure” because even that experience will teach us how to pick ourselves up to try again! · Look for the Best in Everybody: Start By Sitting Together. Let everyone talk. Be a good listener. Check egos at the door. Realize and respect the common backgrounds that we share. And don’t forget to praise each other! · Loyalty is a Two Way Street. You never know when you will need to reach back for a helping hand along the way. · Show Your Gratitude by investing in the Lost Art of Thank-You Notes! After all, we know that, “The Record is The Best Evidence!” · All You Have is What You Bring With You! Remember that You are responsible for yourself. · A Bad Apology is Worse Than No Apology. If you heart is not in it, don’t waste their time with empty words. It doesn’t take a polygraph to read a cold heart. · Tell The Truth, after all that’s the foundation of our careers! · Never Give Up! The most beautiful stones have been tossed by the wind, washed by the water and polished to brilliance by life’s strongest storms. · Be a Communitarian, care about those around you! · Make a Decision: Is my glass half full or half empty? It’s your choice to be fun-loving, positive and uplifting OR you can choose to be sad and negative. We call that “attitude” and people may doubt what you say, but they will always believe what you do! Therefore make it positively inspiring! Thank you for the honor of serving as your MCRA President for 2007-2008! I will always and forever cherish your friendships and your dedication of service to the Missouri Court Reporters Association as an endless blessing in life’s journey! The Success was all because of YOU! Most Respectfully,
Angie Culler, CCR # 158
